“Together, we will create a

safer, more just Cobb.”

SONYA ALLEN

My name is Sonya Allen, candidate for Cobb County District Attorney.

With over 30 years of legal experience and deep roots here in Cobb County,  I am a committed public servant, proud mother and a fearless advocate for justice.

As District Attorney for Cobb County, I will bring comprehensive, diverse legal experience and an extensive knowledge of developing legal strategies for complex cases, as well as the administrative, budget management and supervisory experience required to effectively manage one of Georgia’s largest district attorney’s offices.

Cobb County is my home, and I have a deep connection to this community. A graduate of the University of West Georgia and John Marshall Law School, I currently serve as Deputy District Attorney in the Fulton County District Attorney’s Anti-Corruption Division and am a 30-year veteran of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office. Throughout my career, I have proven my ability to quickly master the nuances of the many different and diverse areas of one of Georgia’s largest agencies. This paved the way for me to become the first and highest ranking African American in the history of Cobb County law enforcement, opening doors for the next generation of Cobb leadership.

I am experienced in handling high-profile criminal and public corruption cases, interviewing tough witnesses and evaluating evidence for prosecution. I have been involved in the prosecution of hundreds of cases throughout my legal career.

Beyond my legal career, I am an active member of my community, serving as a gymnastics judge for the Georgia High School Association-Varsity Sports and participating on several local volunteer committees and programs throughout Cobb County. I am also am a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, cherishing the sisterhood and the opportunities it provides to serve and connect with amazing women globally.

To the office of District Attorney, I will bring my deep devotion to Cobb County, a track record of public service and three decades of legal experience.

I look forward to earning your vote and putting my experience to work to create a safer, more just Cobb County.

Safety. Security. Stability.

Sonya Allen has three decades of experience in the criminal justice system,
giving her a unique perspective on what works, what doesn’t and how our criminal justice system can be better. As the next District Attorney for Cobb County, she will commit to serving the people of Cobb on a platform
composed of five pillars which will reduce violent crime, keep dangerous
criminals off the streets and create a safer Cobb for every family.

  • Sonya knows how important it is for people to have trust in the legal system. The District Attorney’s office is responsible for stewarding taxpayer dollars in the most efficient way possible while guaranteeing a high level of service to the community and to those who are moving through the system. As District Attorney, Sonya will be committed to providing an unprecedented level of access to Cobb residents who value transparency and accountability. Residents have a right to know what is happening, why it’s happening and how much it is going to cost.

  • Keeping our community safe begins with making sure the District Attorney’s office moves cases through the system efficiently. The Sixth Amendment guarantees all Americans the right to a quick and speedy trial, a right that is too often neglected. When our criminal justice system becomes overburdened, dangerous criminals may end up back on the streets while low-level offenders languish for no reason. Sonya will modernize the system to clear the current backlog, expedite cases, keep violent criminals off the streets and lower the burden on Cobb taxpayers.

  • No one is above the law. A 30-year-long career within the criminal justice system has shown Sonya how prosecution can be drastically different for the same crime, depending on a person’s wealth, influence or lack of both. More than anything, our policies and procedures should treat all people equally under the law and reflect our commitment to keeping the people of Cobb County safe. Sonya will ensure that there is no special treatment for anyone and that people who try to take advantage of the system will be prosecuted accordingly.

  • While the District Attorney’s utmost responsibility is to keep violent criminals off the street, not all justice needs to be punitive justice. Georgia has the highest rate of correctional control in the country, with nearly 1 in every 25 people in Georgia on probation alone. As one of the state’s largest counties, our courts and correctional facilities are overburdened with people trapped in a cyclical system. As District Attorney, Sonya will implement more restorative justice policies that keep families and communities together. There are many youth and first-time offenders that deserve not just correction, but compassion. Sonya understands that fostering safer communities and rehabilitative policies are not mutually exclusive and that those who are found guilty of violent crimes should not escape the penalty of the law.

  • It is no secret that those who run the criminal justice system often bear little resemblance to those who suffer its harshest consequences. Sonya believes that the most effective, most fair office requires people with a wide variety of backgrounds who can provide unique perspectives to the challenges that Cobb County faces today. As District Attorney, she will work to diversify the office and create an environment which fosters collaboration.
